Pilot Skill & Mulligan Decisions
A seasoned pilot can navigate a Bracket 3 list to victory against higher-tier opposition. Tactical sequencing, threat evaluation, bluffing, and disciplined mulligan discipline heavily influence final win equity.
We believe algorithmic transparency builds authentic community trust. Here is every formula, calibration fixture, data source, and known limitation behind our estimates.

Our power rating estimates deck lethality velocity on a 1.0 to 10.0 scale based on non-land average converted mana cost (CMC), positive-mana acceleration count, unrestricted tutor density, and compact combo presence:
Power = 4.2 + (3.2 − NonLandCMC) × 1.1 + (FastMana × 0.35) + (Tutors × 0.28) + (Combos × 0.55)Decks categorized as Bracket 5 (cEDH) are bounded between 9.5 and 10.0, while un-upgraded precons baseline between 4.5 and 5.5.
The average turn-win horizon models how quickly an unopposed deck reaches its lethal win condition:
T_win = 10.5 − 0.72(FastMana) − 0.58(Tutors) + 0.45(NonLandCMC)The result is constrained between 2.5 turns (cEDH turbo decks) and 14.0 turns (battlecruiser exhibition decks).
| Bracket | Name | Game Changers | Target Philosophy |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Exhibition | 0 | Theme-first, artistic concepts, narrative play; no mass land denial or extra-turn loops. |
| 2 | Core | 0 | Preconstructed level; battlecruiser combat, no early infinite combos. |
| 3 | Upgraded | Up to 3 | Upgraded precons, focused synergies, efficient interaction; no early 2-card combos. |
| 4 | Optimized | Unlimited | High power with zero restrictions beyond the official ban list. |
| 5 | cEDH | Unlimited | Competitive tournament mindset; sub-2.0 average CMC and maximum speed. |
Our mana base calculator applies exact cumulative hypergeometric distributions for a 99-card deck:
P(X ≥ k) = 1 − Σ [ C(K, i) · C(N − K, n − i) ] / C(N, n)For a standard 36-land deck, the exact probability of drawing at least 3 lands by Turn 3 on the play (9 cards seen) is 70.4%, and on the draw (10 cards seen) is 78.0%. Dr. Frank Karsten's 99-card colored source benchmarks require 19 sources for C on T1, 18 for 2C on T3, and 28 for 1CC on T3 to achieve 90% on-curve consistency.
Every statistical model introduces pragmatic boundaries. While our algorithms provide objective mathematical baselines, tabletop Magic involves complex emergent factors that cannot be captured by static card analysis alone:
A seasoned pilot can navigate a Bracket 3 list to victory against higher-tier opposition. Tactical sequencing, threat evaluation, bluffing, and disciplined mulligan discipline heavily influence final win equity.
Non-infinite, high-synergy engines (such as aristocrats death-drain loops, continuous blink loops, or proliferate cascades) can outpace raw converted mana cost benchmarks through cumulative turn-over-turn compounding.
Commander is fundamentally an interactive 4-player social contest. Table threat assessment, temporary truces, and mutual target coordination dynamically reshape live match equity, often suppressing early front-runners.
Even tournament-tuned competitive lists experience natural draw variance. Opening hand card distribution and top-deck sequences fluctuate within standard binomial probability curves over any individual Swiss round or game session.
In a 99-card singleton format, discrete hypergeometric distributions dictate land consistency without replacement. Drawing three lands by Turn 3 requires balancing land density against mana rock velocity:
Unlike 60-card formats where four identical copies ensure tight distribution variance, 99-card singleton libraries suffer from wide standard deviation tails. A player running 34 lands has only a 65.4% chance of hitting three natural land drops by Turn 3 on the play. Elevating land count to 38 shifts this probability to 75.1%, drastically mitigating early-turn mana screw and tempo loss.
For colored mana requirements, our calculator enforces Dr. Frank Karsten's colored source guidelines: requiring 19 single-color sources for Turn 1 plays, 18 sources for single pips on Turn 3, and 28 sources for double pips (CC) on Turn 3 to maintain 90% on-curve casting consistency under standard mulligan rules.
To verify these mathematical models, our test suite simulates opening draws against the discrete multivariate hypergeometric distribution. When calculating the joint probability of drawing both required land count and colored mana requirements across turns 1 through 4, the cumulative distribution function (CDF) accounts for the declining library size as cards are drawn each turn. Incorporating 9 to 10 fetchlands in multi-color commander decks acts as dynamic fixing, virtually inflating colored source counts without diluting total land ratios.
